Planning

The primary purpose of the AONB designation is to "conserve and enhance the natural beauty" of the landscape. The Government has confirmed that the qualities and protection of AONB's are equivalent to those of National Parks.

In addition to positive action to improve the environment, Local Authorities need to take account of the AONB and ensure its protection through the planning system. This will mean that the impact of developments within the AONB will need to be carefully considered.

What to do if you need advice on planning issues

If you need to know whether your property is in the AONB, you can check on our map.
