Fingerpost spotting
Fingerposts are just one of the common features of the Dorset countryside and their design is thought to be unique, contributing to Dorset’s very special local character. Unfortunately our Dorset Fingerposts are slowly becoming a thing of the past.
Many have been repaired using different materials and lettering and so look very different or have been replaced using with new modern styles of signs. Others are in need of TLC or have already been lost as they become broken and run down.
Help safeguard this important part of Dorset’s unique heritage by assisting the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and Cranborne Chase & West Wiltshire Downs AONB with the countywide Dorset Fingerpost Project.
We want you to help us by taking photos and recording information on Dorset’s traditional Fingerposts. Simply download the form, pick up your camera and go out and find these special signs – whether it be close to where you live or further afield.
A volunteer has been busy working with us to plot all the fingerposts on a digital map so all the survey information can be used effectively.
