Want to install wood burning heating systems?

Woodlink is carrying out research to establish how much woodfuel the county can supply sustainably - this will be published online here. We are also seeking funds to establish a network or co-operative for woodfuel supply within the county, to create a woodfuel directory and to promote woodfuel as a clean renewable energy source.

You can find out more about woodfuel with these information sheets and contact us if you need more information.

Want to supply woodfuel?

If you're worried there isn't enough wood, see below...

Woodlink commissioned a report in 2009 to assess:

  • how much woodfuel could be produced from Dorset's woodlands without affecting existing timber markets, and
  • what the potential demand could be over the next 25 years

In summary, the report found:

  • there is an adequate potential supply - but this relies on increased woodland managment.  Planting trees for woodfuel now for coppicing in 17-15 years is encouraged
  • The potential demand is huge - it's well worth considering feeding into a supply system if you manage woodland or can source fuel grade wood

Furniture, fencing, hurdles, charcoal, thatching materials. In the past, most of Dorset's woodlands have been utilised to provide a wide range of products, from building materials such as timber frames and thatching spars to fuel such as charcoal. Look for the ‘Direct from Dorset' logo which indicates locally produced material and the FSC logo which shows the products have come from sustainably managed forests and woodlands.

Woodland Strategy

In 2007 Woodlink published Dorset's Woodland, Trees and Forest Strategy.  Developed with lots of partner and public input, the strategy is a widely agreed reflection of priorities and aims for all things woody. This document can help if you're planning a new wood-focussed project or looking for funding to develop woodland activities or business. The AONB Partnership and Woodlink will support activities that are meeting the priorities in this strategy.
