Dorset Fingerpost Project

The Dorset Fingerpost Project

dorsetfingerpostweb_1

Fingerposts are a common feature of the Dorset countryside and their design is thought to be unique.  Along with other roadside features like traditional phone boxes and bridge plates they contribute to local character.

Thank you to everyone who has completed the many forms we have received so far and because of your time, we have managed to get all the fingerposts within the Dorset AONB surveyed.

Unfortunately our Dorset Fingerposts are in decline.  Many have been repaired using non-traditional materials or lettering or replaced using ill-considered new versions, others are currently in need of TLC or have already been lost.

Help safeguard an important part of Dorset’s unique heritage by joining in with the Dorset Fingerpost Project. We want you to help us by taking photos and recording information on Dorset’s traditional Fingerposts. Simply download the form, pick up your camera and go out and find these special signs – whether it be close to where you live or further afield.  PLEASE NOTE: ALL FINGERPOSTS WITHIN THE DORSET AONB HAVE BEEN SURVEYED, but we would still welcome forms outside the AONB, as this is a Countywide project.

Your form will be collated and the information used by Dorset County Council Highways to use as a guide for fingerpost refurbishment in the future. The Dorset AONB are now having dicussions about the future of these special posts.

The form is available to download here. Fingerpost Spotting Form 309.00 Kb

We are also looking for old photos which have captured a fingerpost somewhere in the shot.  Please send them to us too and we will show some of them on our website.

Whilst we want you to have fun and enjoy your spotting, we also require you to take care extreme care. Please park responsibly, look out for passing traffic, take care around what can be fragile fingerposts, and take any safety precautions that you feel necessary. Eg warning triangles, a helper to watch for traffic, and should you require a fluorescent visible jacket then please contact the Dorset AONB on 01305 228239.
