This iron age hillfort and common really does feel tucked away. The National Trust has granted open access so its a nice place to wander and even get a little bit lost!

From the top of the hill, there are superb views to Purbeck and the Isle of Wight. Look for an oval bank which enclosed an Iron Age farmstead here over 2000 years ago. There are also the remains of field boundaries and tracks. These earthworks are nationally-important and protected as a scheduled monument.

This area was used by locals as a pasture woodland until the 19th century. As you wander take time to notice the magnificent old trees festooned with lichens and ferns. The dead wood is left as a habitat for invertebrates, beetles, birds and mammals.

The Down is a south-facing chalk slope which is awash with wild flowers in spring and summer. Bluebells, harebells and field scabious brighten the landscape and make it a picturesque walking spot at this time of year. These plants attract a wide range of butterflies and other insects.

Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife too – keep watch for roe deers and hares or buzzards soaring over the trees.
