Access improvements at Fossil Forest

Access to the Fossil Forest, a Site of Special Scientific Interest on the Jurassic Coast, was closed in 2015 following a major rock fall.

Working closely with architects, engineers and geo-technical experts, solutions for re-opening this special site have been found.

Fossil Forest near Lulworth

The Fossil Forest which lies to the east of Lulworth Cove, will re-open in January 2020. The last bit of work is to install mesh panels to the new railings. During summer 2019 when the Ranges were open, Dorset Council Highways replaced and repaired the steps and railings, and built a beautiful new seating area with probably one of the best views anywhere along the coast! Two fossils trees have been generously donated by Albion Stone and were delivered and dropped on site by helicopter as part of a military exercise.

There have also been improvements to the entrance, and a new wooden welcome sign and interpretation panel will be installed before the site is opened. A new panel has also been put up at Lulworth Cove which highlights the location of the Fossil Forest.

Earlier work included netting an unstable area of overhanging rock (with one-off consent from Natural England).

The Fossil Forest access project has been made possible through Coastal Communities funding, together with financial support from Lulworth Estate, Ministry of Defence and the Geological Association Curry Fund.

We are very excited at the prospect of this incredible place re-opening in January 2020.

The project is part of “People and Places”, a Dorset Coast Forum coordinated portfolio of 18 projects working together along the Dorset coast, all funded by the Coastal Communities Fund.
