This is an exciting opportunity to develop skills and care for the remarkable South Dorset Ridgeway.
What are the volunteer rangers?
They provide voluntary professional support for Dorset Countryside and our many partners. You don't need experience, you just need the right attitude - we will provide you with training and information should you require it. Regular social evenings are held to ensure volunteer rangers are kept up to date, and, most importantly, to ensure they have an opportunity to chat to other volunteers.
We are not the only group to offer volunteering opportunities within Dorset. However, we believe our support has the edge because of our structured approach which is reminiscent of the National Park service. This will not replace existing volunteer arrangements but rather provide an enhanced, complementary service for those volunteers wishing to extend and develop their role. Have we enticed you yet?
Who can become a volunteer ranger?
Anyone over the age of 18 - from a school-leaver seeking that first step for a career in countryside management, to a retired person looking for further lifelong learning opportunities. The scope of the service is wide-ranging so, whatever your interests and skills, there should be a role that suits you.
How do I become a volunteer ranger?
There is a formal recruitment and selection process (as for any member of staff) which includes an application form and informal interview. Once selected all recruits undergo an induction and core training course, equipping them with all the basic skills needed. This can be followed by further accredited training in more specialised areas, to develop the particular interests and skills of the individual. Uniforms and appropriate equipment and tools will be provided.
What is the commitment?
In return for our investment in you as a volunteer ranger we would expect a minimum time commitment from you. This can be negotiated on an individual basis but would be, on average, about 1 day per month or 12 days per year.
